Im Rahmen der 47. Internationalen Händel-Festspiele Karlsruhe fand am Badischen Staatstheater Karlsruhe der weltweit erste Gesangswettbewerb für Countertenöre statt: Der 1. Farinelli-Wettbewerb für Countertenöre, der zu Ehren des bekanntesten Sängers dieses Fachs vom Künstlerischen Leiter der Festspiele Christoph von Bernuth ins Leben gerufen wurde.
Zum Wettbewerb
Der Farinelli-Wettbewerb wendet sich an Countertenöre aller Stimmfächer unter 35 Jahren und umfasst neben dem historisch bedingten Schwerpunkt auf barocke Partien ausdrücklich auch späteres Repertoire bis in die Musik der Gegenwart. Neben der Vergabe von Auszeichnungen durch eine fünfköpfige Fach-Jury werden auch konkrete Engagements vergeben, u. a. bei den Internationalen Händel-Festspielen Karlsruhe 2026. Die Geldpreise werden zu einem Großteil aus den Reihen der Händel-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe e.V. gestiftet.
Aus aller Welt haben sich für die erste Ausgabe des Wettbewerbs knapp 50 Sänger beworben, von denen sich 23 in der ersten internen Vorrunde einer prominenten fünfköpfigen Jury vorgestellt haben.
Die diesjährigen Mitglieder der Jury:
Zehn der Wettbewerbsteilnehmer rückten ins Semifinale vor, das Mitglieder der Händel-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe e.V. und der Karlsruher Gesellschaft der Freunde des Badischen Staatstheaters bereits exklusiv miterleben durften. Am selben Tag wurde auch der Wettbewerb für den Sonderpreis Neue Musik ausgetragen.
Das Große Finale
Das Abschlusskonzert am 2. März war zugleich die Finalrunde, in der die sechs Favoriten in aller Öffentlichkeit und begleitet vom Karlsruher Barockorchester gegeneinander antraten – und an dessen Ende Sieger gekürt und Preise verliehen wurden.
Folgende Teilnehmer durften sich im Großen Finale präsentieren:
Im Finale, das im ausverkauften Kleinen Haus des Badischen Staatstheaters stattfand, präsentierten sich die sechs Teilnehmer mit je zwei von der Jury ausgewählten Arien, die ihnen die Chance gaben, die ganze Bandbreite ihres Könnens zu zeigen: Eine gefühlvoll auszugestaltende Lamento-Arie, und eine Koloratur-Arie, die große Agilität und Virtuosität verlangte. Begleitet wurden die Finalisten vom Karlsruher Barockorchester unter der Leitung von Luca Quintavalle als Maestro al Cembalo. Christoph von Bernuth führte als Moderator durch den Abend.

Die Preisträger
Den von der Händel-Gesellschaft Karlsruhe e.V. gestifteten und mit 5.000 Euro dotierten 1. Preis gewann der 24-jährige Countertenor Dennis Orellana aus Honduras. Mit seiner Interpretation der Arien „Non son sempre vane larve“ (aus Arminio von G.F. Händel) und „Come nube“ (aus Agrippina von G.F. Händel) überzeugte er die Jury. Rémy Brès-Feuillet aus Frankreich konnte sich über den 2. Preis (2.500 Euro) freuen, und zur Überraschung aller lobte Juror Max Emanuel Cencic spontan noch einen 3. Preis über 1.000 Euro aus, den die Jury Yongbeom Kwon aus Südkorea zuerkannte. Er durfte sich auch noch über einen weiteren Preis freuen: Das Publikum kürte während der Beratungspause der Jury ebenfalls einen Favoriten – in einem knappen Kopf-an-Kopf-Rennen fiel die Entscheidung auf Yongbeom Kwon.
Die Sänger unter 25 Jahren hatten zudem die Chance auf einen Nachwuchspreis: Ihn nahm Lidor Ram Mesika aus Israel an diesem Abend entgegen. Und auch dem bereits im Rahmen des Semifinales am 28.2. ermittelten Preisträger für den Sonderpreis Neue Musik, dem Franzosen Rémy Brès-Feuillet, wurde die Siegerurkunde im feierlichen Rahmen des Finales überreicht.
Zum Ende der Preisverleihung bot der Gewinner Dennis Orellana nochmals mit großer Verve seine Koloraturarie dar und sorgte für stehende Ovationen im Publikum.
Christoph von Bernuth kann als Begründer des Farinelli-Wettbewerbs ein äußerst positives Fazit der ersten Ausgabe ziehen: „Ich bin stolz und glücklich, dass es uns gelungen ist, den weltweit ersten Countertenor-Wettbewerb ins Leben zu rufen – und dass wir damit für junge Künstler dieses Fachs eine Plattform schaffen konnten, sich zu präsentieren. Mit nur kurzem zeitlichem Vorlauf ist die Ausschreibung bereits auf sehr große Resonanz gestoßen, und wir erhoffen uns, dass der Wettbewerb in den kommenden Jahren zu einer unverzichtbaren Größe in der Barockmusikszene werden wird.“
Intendant und Jury-Mitglied Christian Firmbach freut sich ebenfalls über einen gelungenen Auftakt: „Ich bin ebenfalls sehr froh, dass wir diesen Wettbewerb erstmalig und vor allem eingebettet in ein großes Festival mit langer Tradition etabliert haben. Wir sind sehr zuversichtlich, dass dieses Format zu einem weiteren Leuchtturm der Kultur in der Stadt und weit darüber hinaus werden kann, und dass wir mit diesem Format ein gutes Sprungbrett für junge Künstler auf dem Weg zu einer erfolgreichen Karriere geschaffen haben. Eindeutiges Indiz dafür ist das starke Interesse weltweit, sowohl bei Künstlern als auch bei Agenturen und Publikum. Wir freuen uns bereits jetzt auf die nächste Ausgabe und sind neugierig auf die weiteren, unentdeckten jungen Stimmen.“

The 1st Farinelli Countertenor Competition at the 47th International Handel Festival Karlsruhe
As part of the 47th International Handel Festival Karlsruhe, the world’s first singing competition for countertenors was held at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe: The 1st Farinelli Competition for Countertenors, which was initiated by the artistic director of the festival, Christoph von Bernuth, in honor of the most famous singer in this field.
About the competition
The Farinelli Competition is open to countertenors of all vocal categories under the age of 35. In addition to the historically focused emphasis on Baroque roles, it also explicitly includes later repertoires, extending to contemporary music. In addition to the awards granted by a five-member expert jury, specific engagements are also awarded, including at the 2026 International Handel Festival Karlsruhe. The cash prizes are mainly funded by members of the Handel Society Karlsruhe e.V.
Nearly 50 singers from all over the world applied for the first edition of the competition, 23 of whom presented themselves in the first internal round to a prominent five-member jury.

Ten of the competition participants advanced to the semifinals, which members of the Handel Society Karlsruhe e.V. and the Karlsruhe Society of Friends of the Badisches Staatstheater were able to attend exclusively. On the same day, the competition for the special award for new music was also held.
The Grand Finale
The final concert on March 2nd was also the final round, in which the six finalists performed publicly, accompanied by the Karlsruhe Baroque Orchestra, competing against each other – and at the end, the winners were crowned, and prizes were awarded.

In the final, held at the sold-out Kleines Haus of the Badisches Staatstheater, the six participants presented two arias each, selected by the jury, giving them the opportunity to showcase their entire range of talent: a deeply expressive lament aria, and a coloratura aria that required great agility and virtuosity. The finalists were accompanied by the Karlsruhe Baroque Orchestra, conducted by Luca Quintavalle as Maestro al Cembalo. Christoph von Bernuth moderated the evening.

The Winners
The 1st prize, donated by the Handel Society Karlsruhe e.V. and valued at 5,000 euros, was awarded to 24-year-old countertenor Dennis Orellana from Honduras. He impressed the jury with his interpretation of the arias "Non son sempre vane larve" (from Arminio by G.F. Handel) and "Come nube" (from Agrippina by G.F. Handel). Rémy Brès-Feuillet from France received the 2nd prize (2,500 euros), and to everyone’s surprise, jury member Max Emanuel Cencic spontaneously announced a 3rd prize worth 1,000 euros, which was awarded to Yongbeom Kwon from South Korea. He was also honored with another prize: during the jury’s deliberation break, the audience selected their favorite – in a tight race, the decision was made in favor of Yongbeom Kwon.
Participants under 25 had the opportunity to win a young talent award, which went to Lidor Ram Mesika from Israel that evening. The winner of the special award for new music, Rémy Brès-Feuillet from France, who was determined during the semifinals on February 28th, was also presented with his certificate in a festive ceremony during the final.
At the end of the award ceremony, winner Dennis Orellana gave an energetic performance of his coloratura aria, earning standing ovations from the audience.
Christoph von Bernuth, as the founder of the Farinelli Competition, can draw an extremely positive conclusion from the first edition: "I am proud and happy that we were able to establish the world’s first countertenor competition – and that we were able to create a platform for young artists in this field to present themselves. With only a short lead time, the call for applications already met with a great response, and we hope that the competition will become an indispensable part of the Baroque music scene in the coming years."
Intendant and jury member Christian Firmbach also expressed his pleasure with a successful start: "I am also very glad that we were able to establish this competition for the first time, especially as part of a major festival with a long tradition. We are very confident that this format can become another cultural landmark for the city and far beyond, and that we have created a good springboard for young artists on their way to a successful career. A clear indication of this is the strong worldwide interest, both from artists, agencies, and the audience. We are already looking forward to the next edition and are curious about the further undiscovered young voices."
