Following her great success during the summer at the Arena di Verona as Violetta La Traviata, one of her signature roles, soprano Ekaterina Bakanova returns to Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova and appears as Fiordiligi Cosi fan tutte and soon after as Donna Anna Don Giovanni in Dresden at the Semperoper. The role of Pamina Die Zauberflöte takes her to Teatro Reggio di Torino, and at the end of the season the artist returns to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden for further performances as Violetta followed by more performances in the same role in her return to Semperoper Dresden.
Her career at Covent Garden began last season when, scheduled to appear as Donna Anna and as Musetta La Boheme, she unexpectedly sang Violetta at short notice in place of an ailing colleague and achieved extraordinary success. Miss Bakanova also played Violetta in China at the Great Theatre of Tianjin, at La Fenice and at Kazakhstan’s Astana Opera. Other recent highlights include her debut as Susanna Le Nozze di Figaro at Teatro Reggio di Turino (also broadcast on RAI TV), and as Norina Don Pasquale at NCPA Beijing.
Additionally featured in Miss Bakanova’s repertoire are the roles of Lucia which she sang at Teatro Reggio di Parma, Teatro Comunale di Modena and on the As.Li.Co circuit, and Pamina which she sang in Palermo, Verona and Turin. As Michaela, she performed in Palermo, Verona, Rio de Janeiro at Theatre Municipal and at La Fenice, and she’s also known in Verona for her stunning portrayal of Donna Anna.
Ekaterina Bakanova’s other roles include Gilda Rigoletto which she sang at Torre del Lago Puccini, the Opera Festival of Trapani, Oper Leipzig, Opera di Genoa and at St. Margarethen Festival; Sophie Werther at Teatro Francesco Cilea in Reggio Calabria; Serpina La Serva Padrona at Wexford Festival, Rosina Il Barbiere di Siviglia at Novaya Opera in Moscow, and early in her career, Queen of the Night Die Zauberflöte also at St. Margarethen.
The artist collaborates regularly with conductors such as Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Stefano Montanari, Nello Santi, Placido Domingo, Karel Marc Chicon, Jan Latham Koenig, Mung Wung Chung, Eri Klas and Yutako Sado; and with directors such as Franco Zeffirelli, Robert Carson, Calixto Bieto, Elena Barbalich and Roberto Andó.
Russian-born, Miss Bakanova graduated music school in accordion, piano and singing and won her degree in Vocal Studies from Gnesin Music Academy in Moscow. She went on to place and to win several major international singing competitions before becoming a soloist at Novaya Opera.
Her win at the Giuseppe de Stefano competition and the Maria Caniglia competition in Sulmona led to her professional debut in Italy, where she studies privately with Gabriella Ravazzi in Genova, and where since 2007 she has established a very successful career.
